It’s October now, and I find that this time of year is especially hard on the skin. We have colder, windier weather but spells of intense sunshine. It’s as if the weather can’t make up its mind what season it is.
As well as my skin, my lips suffer too. They need extra moisturizing at this time of year so I thought I would share my recipe for cocoa and shea butter lip balm. Those lips will soon be looking extra succulent!
I’ve made this one into a video since it is so very easy to do so check it out here…

This recipe is very simple and suitable for any age although children will need supervision when heating the oils to melt them.
Ingredients
30g Almond oil
15g beeswax
15g coconut oil
8g Shea butter
7g cocoa butter
1.5g lip balm flavour oil
Most of these ingredients are available in your supermarket. I tend to order from soap making suppliers as the quality is very reliable and they have a wider range available. Most of the ingredients will be available on Amazon or similar online shops too. Check out your local health food shops too for some oils to see what is available in your area.
You will also need to consider what you will be putting these lip balms into. I’m using little lip balm tins from a soap making supplier but you could use anything you wanted. A tiny jam jar would be perfect or reuse some lip balm jars you have available. The recipe above makes around 10 of the small tin containers I’m using.
In the UK, we are only allowed to use lip balm flavours in making lip balms to sell. If they are for your own personal use, you might consider using an essential oil. If you do, you should keep it to one or two drops, as essential oils are very potent and a little goes a long way. Also remember that although essential oils may smell fantastic, they don’t always taste fantastic! Lip balm flavours are readily available online so stick to those where you can. I’m using the Rose flavour oil from Gracefruit.
The method is very simple
- Weigh out all the ingredients
- Place all ingredients except the lip balm flavouring into a saucepan.
- Heat gently until melted, stirring occasionally. Don’t heat them too much. Melting is enough.
- Remove from heat, allow to cool slightly and then stir in the lip balm flavouring.
- Pour into the lip balm containers.
- Allow to cool and set
- Cover jars or tins with a lid and package as you wish.
Apply to your lips!
